we're learning more about what sparked the fbi investigation that ultimately led general david petraeus to resign his post as cia director. officials say he was never under investigation. marla tellez joins us in our studio with what they have learned overnight. >> reporter: the fbi's investigation began with a woman who worked for the state department and overnight she has been identified as jill kelly. kelly, who was a personal close friend of general david petraeus, said she was receiving anonymous, harassing e-mails from someone. well, that someone turned out to be paula broadwell, petraeus' mistress. the nature of those e-mails has not been disclosed. it was during this investigation that fbi agents discovered e-mails between broadwell and petraeus they say were indicative of an extramarital affair, which led to general petraeus' resignation on friday. senator dianne feinstein, who heads up the senate select committee on intelligence says the news hit her like a lightning bolt. >> broadwell sent these threatening e-mails to her and she was frightened and she went to the fbi. oh, i

today the fbi, cia expected to give key members briefing of what happened here and when. and the questions they want answered. mane time, we are awaiting a written statement that was supposed to come yesterday but did not from general allen about the allegations. e-mails and other documents, thousands of pages, tens of thousands, between him and jill kelley. it is important to note senior defense officials say they are not explicit, there's nothing suggestive of an inappropriate relationship that they have seen thus far but that some of the communications may have been unprofessional or even player tashous. allen denied any wrongdoing as of this morning, his boss, defense secretary panetta, says don't lead to conclusions here that we postponed his confirmation hearing for thursday. it was a prudent thing to do, panetta says, until all of the facts on this come out. meantime, here in washington, we are watching a home here where paula broadwell is believed to be. she was just seen a short time ago coming in and out very quickly from her brother's home here in the d.c. area

actually it's the same woman who launched the initial fbi investigation that led to the resignation of general david petraeus. she is jill kelly. apparently she has exchanged 20,000 to 30,000 e-mails, at least that many pages of e-mails with general john allen. john allen replaced general petraeus in afghanistan. now, these e-mails have been discovered and are under investigation by the inspector general at the pentagon. what was their relationship? we do not know. that question was not answered by senior defense officials. but they do say that allen denies any inappropriateness, any wrongdoing. interestingly he was already in town for a confirmation hearing that was previously scheduled for thursday. they were moving him from afghanistan to europe to oversee our forces there. that requires senate confirmation. he was here preparing for that. now according to the defense secretary who made the initial announcement early this morning about this new investigation, that confirmation is on hold. he keeps his job until they have some evidence that there was any wrong doing, which of course
